2025 Legacy Environmental Education Grant

This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Alabama for projects that promote environmental education and foster stewardship among citizens.

Legacy, Inc., Partners in Environmental Education, is offering its 2025 Environmental Education Grant Program to support environmental education projects across Alabama. Legacy’s mission is to be a leader in providing science-based environmental information, education, and training while cultivating a legacy of environmental stewardship for future generations in Alabama. Through this grant program, Legacy aims to assist public and private nonprofit organizations in developing projects that foster environmentally responsible citizens through education.

The Environmental Education Grant Program offers funding of up to $2,500 per project. Proposals requesting more than this amount will not be considered. Eligible applicants include public and private nonprofit organizations based in Alabama. All applicants must provide proof of tax-exempt status through an Internal Revenue Service determination letter indicating specific IRS qualification. Public schools are exempt from this requirement, as their tax-exempt status is recognized through their school system. Organizations without IRS qualification must partner with a qualified nonprofit organization willing to manage grant funds on their behalf.

Grant applications are due no later than midnight Central Time on Friday, March 14, 2025. Applications must be submitted as a complete form with no additional attachments, except for the required IRS determination letter. Award notifications will be sent via email to Project Directors on April 7, 2025, with grant contracts beginning on April 18, 2025, and concluding on December 31, 2025. Funds will be distributed quarterly upon submission of receipts. A Final Report will be required by February 27, 2026, and failure to submit the report will result in termination of the grant and disqualification from future opportunities.

Legacy evaluates applications using criteria focused on feasibility and sustainability, audience reach, scope of work, project schedule, budget effectiveness, evaluation methods, and the level of recognition for Legacy’s support. Projects must clearly identify an environmental education need, explain how it will be addressed, and demonstrate the qualifications and experience of personnel. Applications should also show how the project will be sustained in the future. Successful proposals will identify target audiences, particularly underserved populations, describe the project work plan, timeline, and provide a detailed, itemized budget. Applications must also include plans for recognizing Legacy’s contribution through visible signage and public acknowledgment.

Certain expenses are ineligible for grant funding, including general operating expenses, building campaigns, student tuition, travel, personnel salaries or stipends, and cash prizes. Applications that do not adhere to the required format will not be considered. Proposals must designate a Project Director who will act as the fiscal agent responsible for fund management and may be asked to present the project at Legacy workshops.

For questions or submission, applicants may contact Legacy at toni@legacyenved.org or by calling 334-270-5921. Completed applications can be sent by mail to Legacy, Inc., Partners in Environmental Education, P.O. Box 3813, Montgomery, AL 36109, or delivered by UPS or FedEx to 1333 Carmichael Way, Montgomery, AL 36106.
